Furnace not working? Here’s what to do before calling a professional
A broken furnace is not something you ever want to come home or wake up to. But it does happen. And many times it’s something you can troubleshoot and fix yourself.
Here are a few things to do before calling a professional. Note: If you’re uncomfortable with any of these things, please feel free to give us a call at 515-278-2900 – 24 hours a day.
Problem: The furnace is running, but not producing heat.
Solution: This could be a simple one. Maybe the thermostat is set too low, or maybe the pilot light has gone out. Try to turn up the thermostat a few degrees, or check the pilot light to make sure it is lit.
Problem: The furnace is producing heat, but not enough heat.
Solution: Something is obstructing the flow of air through the system. The most likely culprit is the air filter. Look to see if it’s dirty, and replace it if needed. If something else is blocking the flow of air, you may need to call in a professional to take a look.
Problem: The furnace never turns off.
Solution: Check to see if your thermostat is on “fan” mode where it is constantly acting as a fan, even when you don’t need more heat in the house.
Problem: Is your furnace loud, or does it make strange noises?
Solution: This is probably a belt that is loose, or a dirty burner. Our $69 winter clean and check can help you pinpoint this problem and fix it.
