What to do when your air conditioner won’t turn on

If you’ve ever come home on a hot day to an air conditioner that won’t start, we feel your pain.

When your air conditioner is on the fritz, everyone in the house suffers. Fortunately, there are a few things you can try to hopefully get your A/C running again before calling a heating and cooling company.

Replace the air filter

If the air filter in your HVAC system is clogged, then air won’t flow and the air conditioner won’t work. Check to see if dust and debris have clogged your air filter and replace if necessary.

Check the thermostat

The problem could be as simple as a bad setting on the thermostat. If you have the thermostat set to heat instead of cool, then it’s not going to work. If you have it set warmer than the house temperature, then it’s not going to cool. Make sure you have it set on cool and make sure you turn down the temperature to see if the air conditioner will start.

Another possibility is that your batteries are dead. If the screen is blank, then try putting in some new batters to see if the air comes back on.

Yet another possibility is that the thermostat needs replaced.

Check the electrical panel

It’s possible that you’ve blown a fuse – either in your main electrical panel or at the shutoff box near the air conditioner unit. Check both of those.

Reset the air conditioner

Some air conditioners have a reset button. If your’s does not, try turning it off for five minutes and then turning it back on.
