Spring checklist for your HVAC system
Spring is here, which means it’s time to start thinking about whether or not your air conditioner is ready for another grueling summer in Des Moines.
The average air conditioner lasts from 10 to 15 years, so depending on the age of your unit it might be time to start thinking about a replacement. But no matter what age your air conditioner, it’s a good idea to do some annual maintenance to make sure it’s ready for the season.
Your air conditioner should be checked at the beginning of each heating season. Kohles & Bach will perform a $69 air conditioner clean and check. If you want to do it yourself, here are some things you should do.
Getting your A/C ready for spring
Change the furnace filter. If it’s been awhile since you last changed your filter, now is the time to do so. Depending on the size and type of filter you use, it could need changed anywhere from once per month to once every six months.
Clear off any branches or debris that might have fallen on the air conditioner during the winter months.
Remove items that might be obstructing air flow into and out of the air conditioning unit.
With the air conditioner off, rinse away and dirt and debris on the coils with your hose.
Turn the air conditioner on to make sure that cold air comes through the vents.
When the A/C is on, listen to make sure it’s not making any loud noises.
