Why your air conditioner won’t start

There are few things worse on a hot Des Moines summer day than coming home to a house that won’t cool. With temperatures regularly in the 90s during summer, we rely on our air conditioners to keep your home comfortable.

Fortunately, an air conditioner that only produces hot air doesn’t always indicate a serious problem. Here are some common causes of warm air coming out of a system instead of cool air.

Is the condenser coil frozen?

The condenser coil sits outside your house and removes the heat the system collects inside the house and releases it outdoors. If you haven’t had your air conditioner cleaned regularly, your condenser coil can freeze over and stop working. If the coil is frozen, call Kohles & Bach for an air conditioner clean and check.

Do you need refrigerant?

A common cause of your air conditioner blowing warm air is that it’s low on refrigerant. Without coolant your system can’t remove heat from the air. Refrigerant does not deplete or go bad over time, so this indicates that you have a leak. Call Kohles & Bach and we can discover and fix the leak.

Is the condenser damaged?

Over time, a condenser that is dirty or running inefficiently will become damaged and break down. This is rare, but it is a serious problem that can be solved with professional help.

Is the filter dirty?

Sometimes your problem is as easy as replacing your air filter. Dirty filters block air from flowing, which can lead to cool air not getting into your vent. Check your air filters and replace them as needed.
