When your furnace won’t start, there are a few things you can do to check it before calling Kohles & Bach for a furnace repair.
It’s possible that a simple fix will get your furnace running again and get your house warm and comfortable. Here’s what you should do.
Make sure the furnace is turned on
It’s possible the furnace simply was turned off. Look for a switch that looks like a light switch on the furnace and make sure it is turned on. Also, check the blower compartment cover to make sure it’s secured properly. There’s a small switch that it has to press down in order for the furnace to run. Also check your breaker to make sure the furnace has power.
Check the thermostat
If your thermostat display is blank, you might just need new batteries. Beyond that, make sure the thermostat is in heat mode and the fan is on auto. Try turning the temperature up several degrees to see if that gets the furnace to kick back on.
Replace the filter
A dirty filter can be enough to cause your furnace to work less efficiently or shut off altogether. Check the filter, and if it’s dirty replace with a new one.
Check the pilot light
Older furnaces have a pilot light that can go out. Follow the instructions for your furnace and see if you can get the pilot light turned back on.
Check the blower motor
Look inside the little plastic window on the side of your furnace to see if you see a blinking green light. If it’s not blinking green, then you likely have a blower motor problem and need to call a professional.
